The Roussillon Region

The Roussillon area is usually grouped with the Languedoc as a wine region, the region is a long strip of land bordering the Mediterranean. From the hills of Corbières to the Pyrénées mountains, Roussillon is the sunniest region in France. The climate, the history and the traditions of Roussillon make it more similar to Spain than to Languedoc.

The area has vineyards, wineries and caves for wine tasting and purchases. The Languedoc Roussillon is now the largest wine growing region of France and there are numerous vineyards offering the opportunity to taste the many wonderful varieties of wine on offer.

Our Base

For our wine tour we established a base in the village of Fenouillet, in the Pyrénées foothills.

There are two distinctive landscape forms with the river valley flats of Rivesaltes and the rugged mountain vineyards. We choose to experience the mountain vineyards as they have a character different to many others in France.

Other regional attractions

There really is something for everyone in this region of France. Sporting activities within an easy drive include white water rafting, canoeing and canyoning, in the stunning rivers and gorges.

There is horse riding and cycling for all levels along forest tracks that meander through the hills, and follow clear mountain streams ideal for cooling off. A naturalists paradise, the area is famous for its well-marked walking trails to suit all levels of fitness. From these you can observe the abundant flora and fauna, notably butterflies, wild orchids, eagles and other beautiful flowers and birds.

An hour's drive away is the unspoilt windswept coast line where you can wander over the dunes and find a naturists beach. In the winter the ski slopes are less than an hour's drive away and free of the huge lift queues experienced in the Alps. There is also great cross-country skiing. This really is paradise - come and find out for yourself as it more than just wine and Food!

What makes this a great area for wine and food lovers?

Take slices of fresh baguette, flute or pain bread, toast over an open fire, rub with garlic, squeeze on half a very ripe tomato, add lashings of extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt and you have the essence of Pa Amb Tomaquet, Bread with Tomato, the culinary flagship of Roussillon/Catalan food. In restaurants you will find it as a snack or a side dish of your main course of say Bouillinade, a local bouillabaisse dish of fish, potatoes and pimentos. And to wash it down a glass of Cotes du Roussillon Villages red - perfect!
