The Mèdoc is gearing up for its first tastings of the 2017 vintage in the next couple of weeks and the interest is even more intense than usual, following the great frost that struck last April, causing an overall drop in production across the Bordeaux region of around 40%.
The damage was by no means evenly spread across the region, as the map below shows.

The area to the left of the Gironde estuary, containing the famous chateaux of the Mèdoc, was comparatively uneffected. The worst-effected areas were principally in St Emilion and Graves, to the east and south of Bordeaux respectively.
Some famous chateaux have announced that they are not making any wine at all, some have been saying that although quantities are down, quality is exceptionally good, after kind weather in the summer and during harvest.
So, as I said, the level of interest, in the exceptionally competitive world of the fine wines of the Mèdoc, is really high. Watch this space!
