A wet winter in St Estèphe
Friday 2nd February 2018
It’s a beautiful sunny day here in St Estèphe, chilly at 7°C but warm in the sunshine. The forecast is for the sunshine to last all day but – more rain is coming on Saturday and Sunday.
This has been an abnormally wet winter in the Mèdoc and, unusually, it has been possible to see vines in pools of standing water.
Over the centuries the Mèdocains have worked out pretty well where they can and can’t plant vines – they plant them where they only get a moderate amount of water, ideally a bit less than they need, on well-drained soil.
So this is a pretty unusual sight.
